I didn’t think I’d be a big fan of Broadway musicals, but when a new friend starring in the hit Rent got us 3 tickets, we figured when in New York… Wow. It was incredible! Our kind host, Merle, plays Joanne in this emotionally charged story about survival, love, tolerance and AIDS. The performance reminded me of impassioned choirs in Pentacostal or Baptist church – mind you, this was like going to the real life church of hard knocks. An interesting aspect of the story was that it takes place just blocks from where we are staying in the East Village. Now I finally understand the spoof musical sequence Lease during the opening of Team America.
